SAQuTI
Our Goal
SA QuTI will create the conditions for a globally competitive research environment in quantum technology and grow a local quantum technology industry in South Africa.
Nodes
SA QuTI is a consortium of five universities, comprising three main centres and two emerging centres. Each node specialises in key areas of research and development and support human capital development.
Resources
Explore a curated collection of materials designed to support learning, research, and collaboration in quantum science and technology.
Events
Stay informed about upcoming conferences, workshops, seminars, and public lectures in quantum science and technology.
Publications
Our SA QuTI members are constantly exploring new research in Quantum Computing, Quantum Communications and Quantum Metrology, Sensing and Imaging.
2025
International Year of Quantum Science and Technology
The International Year of Quantum (IYQ) is a global initiative celebrating the transformative potential of quantum science and technology. It aims to raise awareness, foster collaboration, and inspire innovation in this cutting-edge field. Through events, educational programs, and outreach activities, IYQ highlights quantum’s impact on shaping the future and solving real-world challenges.
Emerging Leaders
At SA QuTI, we understand that strong leadership is crucial for pioneering advancements in quantum technology, To achieve this, we are dedicated to establishing emerging researchers that will drive innovation, foster collaboration and develop expertise in this cutting-edge field.
Dr Isaac Nape
Dr Isaac Nape was the first SA QuTI Emerging Leader. Isaac is a full-time academic at the University of the Witwatersrand. At the end of 2023, Dr Isaac Nape was appointed as the inaugural Optica Emerging Leader in Optics Chair.
Dr Kelvin Mpofu
In 2024, Dr Kelvin Mpofu became the second SA QuTI Emerging Leader as well as a full-time researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
Leadership
Funded by DSTI
The SA QuTI initiative is proudly funded by South Africa’s Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI). This support underscores the commitment to advancing quantum technologies, fostering innovation, and developing a skilled workforce to drive the country’s leadership in this transformative field.
