Seminar: Should we use parameterised quantum circuits for machine learning

24 January 2025

Stellenbosch University hosted a thought-provoking seminar featuring Dr. Ryan Sweke from AIMS South Africa, who explored a central question in the field of quantum machine learning (QML): Are parameterised quantum circuits (PQCs) truly useful for learning tasks?

Dr. Sweke presented a nuanced view of the strengths and limitations of PQC-based algorithms, drawing from recent theoretical and empirical research. PQCs – variational quantum circuits often used in hybrid quantum-classical learning – have been widely promoted for their flexibility and suitability for near-term quantum devices. However, Dr. Sweke offered evidence that questions their practical advantage in certain machine learning contexts.
