Quantum Science and Technology across Africa

23-27 June, 2025

In celebration of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IQY2025), the Quantum Science and Technology across Africa workshop, hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), brought together researchers, and students to showcase Africa’s growing role in the global quantum ecosystem.

Participants joined from Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Ghana and South Africa with support from colleagues in Germany — all united by a shared commitment to advancing quantum research in Africa. Together, we explored ongoing projects and future possibilities, laying the groundwork for a strong, collaborative African QST network.

The workshop featured poster sessions from students across Africa, showcasing exciting emerging research and providing a platform for the next generation of quantum scientists to share their ideas and connect with international experts.

There was also a public lecture on Wednesday evening, where science met art. We were inspired by a presentation from Prof Andrew Forbes, stories from poet Dr Gcina Mhlope and music from jazz artist Mr Zibusiso Mahkathini.

As Dr Gcina Mhlope beautifully reminded us, “Let’s keep on playing with science”. A perfect call to action for #IYQ2025.

The workshop was made possible thanks to the support of Wilhelm und Else Heraeus-Stiftung, African Laser Centre, SA QuTI and University of KwaZulu-Natal.
